Heat Pump Maintenance · Guide

How Long Do Heat Pumps Last?

Heat pumps commonly last around 10-15 years, although some properly installed and well-maintained systems can remain useful longer.

EnergySage's lifespan guide, updated April 17, 2025, uses roughly 10-15 years as the common range and notes that installation, use, maintenance, and equipment all affect actual service life.

ENERGY STAR recommends considering replacement once a heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old, particularly when repairs become frequent and energy bills rise.

Why Do Heat Pumps Wear Differently From Furnaces?

A heat pump can run in both heating and cooling seasons.

That can mean more annual operating hours than equipment used for only one season.

But lifespan still depends more on the actual installation and operating environment than on a single generic age number.

What Shortens Heat Pump Life?

Common contributors include:

  • poor installation
  • incorrect sizing
  • restricted airflow
  • neglected filters
  • dirty coils
  • frequent short cycling
  • electrical problems
  • coastal corrosion
  • poor drainage
  • repeated unresolved faults
  • extreme runtime

No maintenance schedule eliminates mechanical wear.

Can Maintenance Extend Lifespan?

Good maintenance can help prevent avoidable problems and keep airflow/operation in better condition.

ENERGY STAR recommends regular filter checks and professional pre-season service.

Do not treat maintenance as a guarantee that a system will last a specific number of years.

How Do You Know a Heat Pump Is Near the End?

Warning signs include:

  • repeated major repairs
  • rising electricity use without rate/weather explanation
  • declining heating/cooling capacity
  • frequent compressor/control failures
  • corrosion
  • increasingly difficult parts
  • major refrigerant-system problem
  • comfort decline despite proper service

Age plus expensive repair is more meaningful than age alone.

Is a 10-Year-Old Heat Pump Old?

It is old enough to start evaluating replacement economics, not necessarily old enough to replace immediately.

ENERGY STAR uses more than 10 years as a point where homeowners should consider replacement, especially when other problems are present.

A healthy 10-year-old system may have useful life remaining.

Repair or Replace?

Use four numbers:

  1. age
  2. repair price
  3. replacement price
  4. expected future operating/repair difference

Does a Compressor Failure Mean Replace the Whole System?

Not automatically.

Check:

  • parts warranty
  • labor warranty
  • system age
  • compressor repair price
  • refrigerant/system condition
  • other equipment condition

A compressor under warranty on a young system is different from a compressor failure on a 15-year-old system with multiple other problems.

Do Geothermal Heat Pumps Last Longer?

DOE's 2021 consumer guide estimates 20 years or more for geothermal equipment and 25-50 years for the underground piping. These are planning estimates, not a lifespan guarantee.

That is a different system architecture.
