Heat Pump Running Constantly
A heat pump running for long periods is not automatically a problem, especially with variable-speed equipment.
Modern inverter systems are designed to modulate output and can run continuously at low capacity to maintain stable comfort.
Investigate when the system runs constantly and cannot maintain temperature, uses unusually high electricity, or shows other abnormal symptoms.
Safety: For smoke or suspected fire, leave the building, stay outside, and call 911 from a safe location. For repeated breaker trips, burning smells, or damaged wiring without signs of fire, stop troubleshooting; switch the thermostat Off only if safe and call a qualified HVAC technician. Do not open equipment cabinets or work on refrigerant components.
When Constant Operation Is Normal
Long runtime can be normal when:
- weather is near design conditions
- variable-speed system is modulating
- home is recovering gradually
- system is dehumidifying in hot weather
- thermostat is holding a tight setpoint
Do not judge a variable-speed heat pump by old single-stage cycling expectations.
When Constant Operation Is a Problem
Investigate when:
- indoor temperature keeps drifting from setpoint
- auxiliary heat runs constantly
- electric use spikes sharply
- airflow is weak
- outdoor unit is iced
- system never reduces capacity
- unusual noise/odor appears
Check the Filter
A dirty filter can restrict airflow and make the system work harder.
Check Thermostat Settings
Large setpoint changes can create long recovery periods.
ENERGY STAR recommends steady heat-pump settings rather than aggressive setbacks for many systems.

Could the System Be Undersized?
Possibly.
An undersized heat pump can run at maximum output and still fail to meet the load in extreme conditions.
But runtime alone does not prove undersizing.
Compare the Manual J load with actual equipment capacity at the outdoor condition.
Could It Be Duct Leakage?
Yes.
If conditioned air is leaking into an attic/crawlspace or return ducts pull in unconditioned air, the system may run longer to satisfy the thermostat.
Could Low Refrigerant Cause It?
Refrigerant-system problems can reduce capacity and increase runtime.
That requires professional diagnosis.
Do not add refrigerant as a homeowner fix.
Is Constant Running More Efficient Than Cycling?
For a variable-speed heat pump, long low-output operation can be efficient and comfortable.
The objective is not to minimize runtime.
The objective is to deliver the building load efficiently.
When Should You Call a Technician?
Call when constant operation comes with:
- failure to maintain setpoint
- unusual electricity use
- icing
- abnormal sound
- weak airflow
- fault codes
- repeated auxiliary heat
- sudden change from prior behavior
Get Constant-Running Problems Diagnosed
If the system is running continuously and losing ground, get a professional diagnosis instead of guessing from runtime alone.
